I hate fruit. I’ll bite on a banana or nibble on an apple now and then, but grapes, berries, melons, citrus; they all make me gag.
One of my new year’s goals is to get healthier though, and that includes healthier eating. Since I have quite a few vegetable allergies, that means adding more fruit to my diet.
So, how to overcome the urge to vomit when I take a bite of berry?
To answer this question, I put on my industrial sized thinking cap and burned up some synapses. After a while my youngest child, tired of the smell of frying brain cells, offered his own solution.
“You could drink it,” he said, waving his hand in front of my face to clear away all of the smoke pouring from my ears and nose.
I felt the light-bulb blink on. What a fantastic idea. I don’t like oranges, but I love orange juice. I can’t stand strawberries, but I can easily scarf down a pint of strawberry ice cream.
So, I dug out the blender, grabbed the berries and bananas that I bought for my kids to eat, added some milk, yogurt (which I also hate) and some protein powder and 60 seconds later, drank a glass of pureed fruit.
By my third smoothie three days later, I’d quit gagging and managed to drink a whole glass of it and not hate it.
Problem solved! By my twelve-year-old no less.
So, lesson learned this week: If you can’t eat it, drink it!
How have you learned to eat foods you hate? Feel free to share your stories in the comments below.
There’s a lot of blog fodder coming up as I start a 90 day fitness challenge on February 14. Visit often as share my efforts to get healthy!
I love smoothies! Just be careful in regards to calories. Stick to non-fat/lowfat ingredients (i.e. skim milk instead of whole, yogurt instead of ice cream). Happy blending!
Hi Shona! Thank you! That’s great stuff to keep in mind. I figure it’s a good way to eat yogurt too (which, I also don’t like).
Thank you for stopping by!
Throw a few leafs of spinach or kale in for a little extra nutritional boost. I am man enough to admit that I truly began to enjoy fruit from watching Lazy Town with my daughter. The lead character – Sportacus – calls fruit ‘nature’s candy’. I don’t know why that resonated with me, but every since, when the afternoon hunger pangs hit, my co-workers hit the snack machine, but I go for the fruit bowl!!
“Nature’s candy” what a great phrase. I’m going to have to retrain my brain to think that way. Unfortunately, I’m allergic to spinach, but I’ll have to look into Kale and other greens. Thank you for stopping by!
I love veggies, but I don’t like fruit either. I’ve been thinking about including a protein drink in my daily menu, and I like the idea of your smoothie. I think I’ll give it a try!
Hi Sandra! There are some great smoothie recipes on the web too. The one I use calls for frozen banana chunks/slices rather than ice. I never would have thought of that.
I have recently ‘discovered’ smoothies too. They are great for the kids, we keep frozen strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in the freezer.. that way we always have something healthy to hand. Sometimes we even add a small amount of kale.. you really don’t notice it at all once it is blitzed and it is oh so healthy!
That’s a smart young guy. As for me, there are lots of things I hate to eat. One way I still eat them is to combine them with something that I enjoy eating like eating potato (yuck!) with lots of egg and tomato sauce(yeah!). Another way would be to imagine that I’m actually eating some of my best foods (this strategy is crazy but works sometimes).
Well, it’s a pity, I can’t drink potato so, I’m stuck with eating it.
Hi Lanre!
I never tried imagining that it was actually a food I liked. I’ll have give it a whirl! Also, someone mentioned recently that your taste buds will eventually adapt to the new taste if you give them a chance.
Thank you for coming by and commenting!
Smoothies rock! My problem with fruit is I love the summer fruits (the one’s you’ve said that you dislike) but winter fruits bore me. Down with oranges & apples, give me watermelon, berries, nectarines, etc.
